Events and Reminders – 18 November 2020

Athletics Day Years 1-8
Weather is looking good for Athletics Day on Friday. However, Christian Couper will let us know the day before if the event needs to be postponed until Monday. Thank you to those parents who have completed the consent form. At this point we have enough space on both school vans to transport students to and from the event so we don’t require any additional parent helpers. The vans will depart promptly at 8:15am from the bus bay at Akaroa Area School as the event starts at 9am, and teachers are required to set up and run an event for the day. Just a reminder that the junior events (years 1-2) finish at midday and the senior events (years 3-8) finish at 2:30. Don’t forget hats, lunch, sun block, drink bottle, P.E. uniform, running shoes and money for the bake sale. We look forward to a fabulous day!!
Spring Show
Please see the attached notice. On Friday 27th November we will be holding our annual Spring Show. This is a gala event involving all of the students Years 1-10 from 11am to 2:30pm.
Head Lice
After a long hiatus it seems that these critters have made their way back into the school. Can you please check and treat your children as required.
TOD
A reminder that tomorrow, the 19th of November is a teacher only day and so school is closed.
Pool notice
Please be advised that the pool will be closed to the public and school classes on the following dates due to NCEA Exams:
Thursday 19th November 1.30 – 5.30pm
Tuesday 24th November 1.30 – 5.30pm
Wednesday 25th November 1.30 – 5.30pm

Final day for seniors Wednesday (BBQ lunch):
Final day for senior students (years 11-13) is Wednesday, 11 November.
There will be a whole school barbecue at lunchtime on Wednesday to mark this occasion. Food will be provided by the school. Students are welcome to bring alternative or supplementary lunch.
Some senior individuals will be requested to return to complete internal standards and all seniors will return for prizegiving practice and ceremony in the last week of term.
House touch and softball Wednesday 11 November
House touch and softball competitions will take place on Wednesday 11 November at 9.30am at the rec grounds. All welcome.
School closed Thursday and Friday
School will be closed to students on Thursday as teachers have a professional learning day. School will also be closed on Friday for Canterbury Day (public holiday).
School Formal
The senior Formal takes place on Friday 13 November. Forms and payment are due.
Events and Reminders – 2 November 2020
1) Community Event Quiz Fundraiser
Thank you to all of those who participated and contributed to the Quiz night on Friday, it was a great turn out. Well done Ms Mann for the fabulous supper and of course a big thank you to Heartlands and Bob Masefield for organising the event.
2) House Swimming
Wednesday 4 November (new date to make the most of sunshine) is House Swimming involving all Year 7-13 students. Please come to school in PE gear with: at least two towels, swimming togs, plenty of healthy food, drink bottle, hat, a warm jersey and sunblock.

3) Parihaka Day
On Thursday, all Year 5-8 students will be travelling to Okains Bay School on the bus to join with other Banks Peninsula schools. Just a reminder that a water bottle and a hat are essential as it is looking like being a very hot day. Students are to be in PE uniform (the correct uniform) and will be provided with a school tracksuit. Please bring a healthy lunch and morning tea as well.
4) Support for Students and Families

Parihaka
Years 5-8 will be celebrating Parihaka Day at Okains Bay School on Thursday November 5. The bus will be transporting students from AAS at 8:50 and returning to school before the end of the day.

Mufti Day
Tomorrow is mufti day and the student council have set a theme of inside out and back to front.
Hypnotist AAS Fundraiser
Our parent group have organised an event for Saturday 21 November at 7pm at the Gaiety. Please see the attached poster.
Quiz Night

Assembly
We have changed the date for our next assembly from Friday November 6 to Tuesday November 10 at 9:00am.

Hopefully by tonight you will have all got the photo keys that have been sent home with students.
The first cut off for free delivery is 1 November so that seniors can get their orders before they go off on exam leave. The second cut off for free delivery is 15 November but all whanau are welcome to order in either set.

Pedestrian Gate by Pohatu
We have been locking this gate for safety reasons but have now decided to leave it unlocked but are requesting that parents please make sure it is securely shut whenever they use it.

Assembly
We have changed the date for our next assembly from Friday November 6 to Tuesday November 10 at 9:00am.
Teacher Only Day
The only two scheduled teacher only days remaining this year are 12 and 19 November. Prizegiving this year will be held on 10 December and this will be student’s last school day for the year.
Pool Cards
We are gratefully accepting returned pool cards from those who do not intend to use them this season as we are short of cards and our news cards haven’t arrived yet.
Mental Health Evening
27 October 6.30pm – Suitable for senior school students, families, farmers and wider community. Guest speaker Dr Lucy Hone. Live music by Peat and The Lemon Tea. Free admission and supper.

AAS Open Day and Assembly
All invited to attend Assembly Tuesday, please be seated by 9.00am, all seating downstairs
Year 11-13 Mentorship Programme
A reminder that the senior students will be meeting with their mentors this Wednesday for either a full or a half day catch up, dependent on their activities. Students to come to school as normal with a packed morning tea, lunch and drink bottle. Students are able to wear mufti appropriate to their activity. Ms Tainui will meet with students tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the specific details and a letter will be sent home to outline the programme for each individual student.
Prize giving cups and trophies
Please return all prize giving cups and trophies to the office this week.
Hats
A reminder that with Summer upon us, it is now compulsory for hats to be worn at school during interval and lunch time. Sunsmart hats are available from the office.
Rent a Student
In need of tough or dirty jobs done around the house? Want to get the garden looking good this spring? Save the work and have a student do it instead with this school fundraiser.
For just $100 you can rent a student from 9-3 on either 31 October or 7 November.
Students from Years 11 and 12 who just completed the Abel Tasman Track are available. But get in quick to reserve your worker.

Extra Notices – 16 October 2020
Please see the attached flyer for the Democra Sausage Sizzle being held as a fundraiser for Akaroa Area School at the gym. So you can grab a yummy Akaroa Butchery gourmet snag when you go to vote or if you’re just passing.

Hats and Togs
Summer is on the way! In line with our Sunsafe policy, hats are compulsory for outdoor activities this term. These can be purchased from the office for $10. The pool will be open for class use, hopefully by the end of the week. Juniors should bring swimming gear every day once the pool opens.

Closing date for guaranteed school family pool card applications is by Friday (16 October). See letter for link to form.
AAS Open Morning Tuesday 20 October
This is an open invitation to all those who are new to the school in 2021 or are contemplating coming to Akaroa Area School. It will be held on Tuesday 20 October, beginning at 9.00am with an assembly and welcome in the Gymnasium, followed by a guided tour and morning tea. This is a follow up to various information evenings which were held in Term Three – all welcome.

Workshop for potential Trustees 20 October
At 1.00 pm on Tuesday 20 October 2020 there will be a Korari session with Sandy McPherson from the New Zealand School Trustees Association. Everyone is welcome and all aspiring trustees are encouraged to attend. Students interested in the role of student elected representative will be released from class to attend.
