Parents Association Meeting
The next meeting of the parent group is going to be on Monday 29 June, at 2pm. All welcome.
Governance Meeting
A Governance Meeting will be held from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm on Wednesday the 1st of July 2020 in Room 20. If you are interested in the work of a Board of Trustees please come along – you are welcome to attend part or all of the meeting depending on your availability.
Asbestos Removal
As part of the ongoing construction works Hawkins will begin work on block 6 (food tech and room 14) over the coming July school holidays.
This building has been confirmed to contain asbestos. They have engaged Southern Cross Asbestos Removal licensed by WorkSafe to carry out its safe removal.
The asbestos removal work is scheduled to take place from 6 July to 11 July. During the removal process, air monitoring will be undertaken by an asbestos assessor, licensed by WorkSafe, followed by a clearance inspection to ensure all asbestos containing material has been removed. Our neighbours will be advised by Hawkins and we recommend our community stays away from the site over this time.
Events and Reminders – 15 June 2020
Thanks
We would like to say a huge thanks to parents and student who came along on Saturday to help move, sort, scrub and scrap so much stuff. It was a really productive day and your help is really appreciated.
School Building update:
During the July holidays block 6 which currently houses food and soft materials as well as the music room. Work is not due to happen on the block for some time but we are excited as we will get a new modern building to replace the current block. We will keep you updated on progress and plans as they are finalised.
Help needed:
We need a couple of strong people to take rolls of carpet out from a container and roll out to assess wear and tear and measure up. Any time this week would be good
Johnny McDrury:
Akaroa Area School is coordinating the afternoon tea for Johnny McDrury’s funeral this Wednesday afternoon.
If anyone would like to contribute some baking it would be greatly appreciated-it can be dropped off to school before 10 am on Wednesday or to the Little River Rugby club before 12.30.
Also-looking for a couple of extra hands to get the afternoon out smoothly after the funeral. If anyone is able to help please let Garry Brittenden know- 0210329339 or 3048582
Envirosquad news:
Friday the 19th of June will be a special Mufti to raise money for the breast cancer society. Please can students bring a gold coin donation, and wear something pink – the traditional thing to wear is a pink ribbon.
On Friday the 26th of June, the Enviro Squad will be holding an environmental themed mufti and bake sale, to raise money for an environmental charity (yet to be confirmed). Students can bring along some money for baking (there will be vegan and gluten free options), as well as a gold coin donation. This is an alternative to Earth Hour, which took place during lockdown so original plans for that day were not able to go ahead. For this reason, the school will also be turning off/minimizing the use of lights on this day where possible.
Coughs, colds and hand hygiene
Please remember to keep your child at home if they have any signs of sickness. We want to keep colds and flus at bay and we do have some students with medical conditions which leave them vulnerable to illness and we need to protect them.
Please continue to remind your children to continue to use hand hygiene and cough/sneeze protocols that became habit during lockdown.
Beds Required
Does anyone have any single/queen beds to donate or sell cheap? If so please contact the office.

9am, 26th June – Hinewai/Pohatu.

Ways We Communicate
This is to let you know about the ways we share information.
Please have a look at our website by clicking this link http://akaroa.school.nz/ it is full of useful information and photos of our students enjoying their various activities and learning.
We also have two Facebook pages which share a lot of what students have been doing and information about upcoming events.
The school’s open page – https://www.facebook.com/AkaroaAreaSchool/
The closed, friends and family page https://www.facebook.com/groups/781653868941607/?ref=share
We also have an app that provides access to newsletters and permission slips. It also provides a handy link for phoning/emailing an absence to the school.
The app is also how we contact parents in emergency situations so it is important that every caregiver has the app installed on their phone with the notifications turned on.
To download our app please go to google play or the app store and search for “Skool Loop”. Once you have done that please open the app on your phone and select Akaroa Area School.
Please only use the email address aasoffice@akaroa.school.nz as this is the email that is closely monitored. If you reply on a newsletter it won’t go to that address and may get missed all together. Better still use the app contacts and be sure it gets to us.
I have also attached the parent handbook for you.
Events and Reminders – 10 June 2020

Parents just on site to drop off or pick up students do not need to sign in but if you are here for a prolonged period you will need to sign in at the office. We are continuing to use the checkin-19 app as our virtual visitor book.

Election 2020
Message from Andrea Frewen, returning officer for Banks Peninsula General Election:
Please encourage your communities to double check that they are enrolled to vote and that their details are correct by clicking here.
Across the country we need more than 20,000 staff to work for us across the election period, including on Election Day, the 12 days of the Advance Voting period and in the various headquarters during the weeks before and after the election period. In Christchurch we have the HQ for seven electorates, each expecting to employ up to 400 people. All staff are paid, this is not voluntary work. We want to ensure that we have staff that represent our communities. Please can you encourage people in your community to register their interest in working for us here. Once registered they will be advised via email of vacancies as they come up.

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS FROM CHARLOTTE HELPS
We are looking for volunteers to help at school on two days – this Monday 8 June and at a bigger working bee on Saturday 13 June.
Can you help?
Monday 8 June – sorting out shed
2-3 people on Monday morning and 2-3 people on Monday afternoon to relocate contents of the school shed and help identify items to dispose of or sell. There is some shelving to be erected.
Saturday 13 June – working bee
As many volunteers as possible to spend time in identified rooms, cleaning and shifting furniture and sorting items to be sold. One or two volunteers to manage the sale of items probably on the local Buy Sell & Exchange FB page.
I’d be very grateful if you can let me know if you’re able to help on either of these days or if you’d like to help but can’t make either of the days (there will be other opportunities to assist)
We will organize a nice shared meal of some kind on the day of the working bee once we have an idea of numbers.
Thank you very much.
FLEA MARKET THANKS
Huge thanks to Charlotte Helps and the parents association volunteers who made such a success of the AAS stall at the recent flea market. Thanks also to those who donated goods to sell and/or purchased from our stall.
We have been asked to pass on the following.
Message from Annette at the Library.
As you all know we have new processes in place to comply with Government rules and to keep everyone safe. At this time we are asking that all children under the age of 12 are accompanied by an adult when visiting the library. Please could you pass this on to parents/caregivers. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

Pub Charity – Thanks
Additional benches have been installed in the pool area thanks to the grant from Pub Charity. We now have 6 storage benches at the pool. We are very grateful to Pub Charity for funding these along with last season’s pool pump upgrade.
Flea market – Message from the fundraising committee
There’s going to be a community flea market on Saturday 30 May and Akaroa Area School parents will have a stall.
Can you help… either by donating items suitable for sale on the stall, or by helping to sort, disinfect and price items, or helping on the stall on market day?
If you spent some of your lockdown time clearing out your cupboards, this is the perfect opportunity to help raise some money for the school and find new homes for your clean and lightly used items – books, toys, homewares, whatever you think people will buy.
If you’re feeling creative, homemade craft items would be great too!
Please let Charlotte Helps know if you think you’ll be able to donate or help out.
The market will be run with social distancing protocols in place, and lots of disinfectant spray. Even so, we fully appreciate some members of the school community won’t feel comfortable going to the market, or helping out on the stall, that’s ok, we’re working on other socially distant fundraising activities too – more to come soon!
Please call/text Charlotte on 027 343 7677 to arrange for pick up/drop off of goods.
Thanks for your support.
