Spring Show

Thursday November 28.

All students entering the Pet Project and Creative Garden Container competitions are asked to bring their entries to school on Thursday morning, November 28.

Please drop off “Pet Projects” to Onuku by the Junior Hub.

“Creative Garden Containers” are to be dropped off under the eaves of the Gym by the main foyer entrance.

Friday November 29.

Christmas Cookie or Cupcake competition entries are to be brought in Friday morning, November 29, and dropped off at the Food Tech room, clearly named.

Competitors in the Best Lamb event – Please bring your lamb to school between 10-11am on Friday morning. Please tie securely by the Year 13 Common Room and ensure your lamb has plenty of water.

Please register with Judge, Sharon Johnston, when you bring your dog in on Friday morning . Dog entries are to be tied securely under the trees adjacent to the bus bay. Please ensure your pet has plenty of water.

“Other” Pets are to be brought to the Gym on Friday morning. Please ensure your entries are clearly named.”

Events and Reminders – 25 November 2019

Bowls night
Thanks to the Parents’ Association for organising the bowls night and to our students who supervised the children. It was a great social evening.

Spring show. Friday 29 November:

Spring show will take place on Friday starting at 11am with lots of stalls, food and barbecue (no lunch passes will be given), and a wide variety of pets.
It’s still Spring so it’s still time to plant! This year’s Spring Show will have a vast array of vegetable plants for sale. The students have grown some but we have also received an amazing donation of plants from Oderings Nursery.
Also-there will be a variety of Native shrubs and trees for sale (silver tussock, salt marsh ribbon wood, Oioi, Mingimingi and many others

School Prize Giving Wednesday December 11
Our school prize giving will be held on Wednesday December 11 at 11am in the school gym. We look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements and successes with you. You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the field afterwards. The pool will be open for parents to supervise their children from 1.30pm until 3pm. School bus will depart at 1.30pm.

Year 11-13 Call back: Prizegiving practice on 10 December.
Compulsory call back day for Year 11-13 students will be on Tuesday 10 Dec at 1:30pm. Attendance is compulsory (school uniform not required).

International Student Group – 2 to 7 February 2020
Akaroa Area School is pleased to host an international student group from China who will be travelling to Banks Peninsula and attending Akaroa Area School for an international student programme and to experience a wide range of activities focused around our natural/marine environment. We would very much appreciate expressions of interest from families who are interested in hosting International students aged 11-16 years old. This is a great way of building international friendships and will provide a foundation for future international student visits and exchanges. Please email the office to register your interest.

Events and Reminders

Bowls night:
Thanks to the Parent Association for organizing the social bowls night on Saturday 23 November at 5.30pm. $5 per person. Should be lots of fun (see flyer which is attached)

BP Athletics (25 November)
If you haven’t already completed the permission form for BP Athletics please do so ASAP.

Spirit of Adventure
Jodie Oborne is currently sailing on the Spirit of New Zealand from Tauranga to Picton as part of the Tuia 250 Celebrations. She was fortunate to be accepted on this special trip and it will be a great experience for her. Activity Weeks
Tomorrow’s activity for activity week will take place I Le Bons Bay. We are still awaiting consent forms. Make sure that students bring gear for all weathers including a change of clothes and food for the day. A barbecue will be provided so students can bring food to cook or take a packed lunch as well as plenty of snacks and a water bottle. The activity takes place in school time so normal schedules will apply.

School photos
Reminder the deadline for ordering is 24 November and any orders after that, families will have to pay for postage. Please let us know if you haven’t received the code to order your photos online.

Lost Property
There is a large amount of lost property down at the gym. Please have a look through it before it is disposed of at the end of the school year.

Cricket
Years 1-4 have been offered a cricket session on Tuesday November 26 at 11am at Akaroa Area School. Tim Gruijters from Canterbury Country Cricket will be taking the session.

Social Lawn Bowls Night
Please see the attached poster for this upcoming event. 5.30pm Saturday 23 November 2019 at the Akaroa Bowling Club.

Junior Hub Reminders

Assembly:
It has been brought to my attention that some families were unaware of the assembly held last Friday. My apologies. So that everyone gets a chance to attend, we are scheduling an assembly for Friday November 22nd. Of course you are always welcome to visit the Junior Hub.

Nit alert:
We have had reports of nits living on the heads of Junior Hub students. Please check your child’s scalp and treat accordingly.

Hinewai sock puppets:
If you have any old socks at home please send them to school. Ms Mann is helping Hinewai make sock puppets on Wednesday afternoons this term.

Weekly Events and Reminders – 12 November 2019

Geology Trip Postponed
The Geology boat trip planned for tomorrow has been postponed until Wednesday 20 November due to weather. Consent form and $8 need to reach the office this week to enable students to partake.

School closed
Just a reminder that school will be closed on Thursday (Teacher only day) and Friday (Canterbury anniversary day).

Year 6-10 Activities week
Students from years 6-10 will be taking part in activity weeks from 18 Nov to 25 November. Lots of exciting activities are planned (kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, surfing, fishing, snorkeling etc. ) Further information and consent form will follow.

Lemons wanted
Could anyone who has any spare lemons please bring them to the office to help go towards the lemonade stand at the spring show.

Events and Reminders – 6 November 2019

Parihaka Day
Morning tea will be provided but please make sure students bring their lunch and a drink bottle. Students will also need their hats and could they please wear their PE uniform if they have it. There will be a Powhiri and so any women who attend have been asked to please wear a skirt.

Akaroa Civic Trust
Please see the attached notices regarding the 50th Anniversary of the Akaroa Civic Trust and the AGM.

We have been asked to pass on the following

Community Hui
Thursday 7th November, 5.30 at the Gaiety. This is an opportunity to participate in an interactive community workshop, voice your concerns and issues whilst exploring possibilities that best lead to positive Community outcomes. We are looking to identify what is important in our community and how we can work together to make that happen.
We acknowledge Robin Arnold (Community Development Advisor) in facilitating this evening with Andrew Turner (Banks Peninsula Councillor), Jamie Stewart and Nigel Harrison (Community Board Members) in attending to hear “our voice”.
If you might please extend this open invitation as we seek representation from the wider community and encourage all to come as “every voice matters”.
