Events and Reminders – 26 July 2019

Absence Procedures
We would just like to remind parents of our absence procedures. Below is the policy as it is set out in the parent handbook. We really appreciate parents following this procedure as it helps with classroom planning and ensures the safety of our students.
Procedure for planned absences is that parents should write or email in advance stating the reason and duration of absence. Extended absences will be forwarded to the Principal for approval.
For an unplanned absence, you are requested to leave a message on the absence line (304 7108 extension 1) before 9.30am if your child will not be at school. Unjustified absences, in terms of the Ministry rules, are truancy so for the benefit of your student’s attendance record please consider the following:
· It is important that you state the reason for absence especially if due to doctor or dentist appointments or for bereavement, otherwise the absence will be coded as “explained” which is unjustified.
· If you make no contact your student will be marked as truant.
· Contact made but no reason given will be marked as unjustified. Holidays or long weekends taken in term/school time are also coded as unjustified.
If your child is not at school and we have not heard from you we will send you a text message. Please reply to this message stating the reason for absence or contact us immediately by phone if your child should be at school.

Lincoln Zones Rugby and Netball
29 students will be attending the LZ netball and rugby competition on Tuesday July 30. Those travelling in the school van with Ms Hyland or Ms Thorne need to be at school by 8:15am with all their gear and warm clothes.

Bingo Night
Our parent association is organising a Bingo Night fundraiser at 7pm Friday 9 August in our gym, $10 entry plus drinks and food for sale. Our students will be helping out on the night but we would appreciate some parent help as well. Please let the office know if you are available to help.

Term Three Update

A warm welcome back to school.

Term three will be another busy one with the Year 11-12 trip to Rarotonga leaving on Friday and preparations for the highly anticipated School Production underway. The Parent Fundraising Group is busy planning some great events that are focused on having fun as well as raising funds.

The National Area Schools Sports Tournament held in Rotorua during the first week of the holiday was a great success, both on and off the sports field. Our students proved themselves to be great ambassadors for the school and we are very proud of their achievements and the way they conducted themselves. Congratulations to Jada Henare (basketball), Peter Brown (basketball) and Jodie Oborne (netball) who made the South Island Representative teams.

Junior School (Years 1 – 8)

The Junior School Deputy Principal, Ms Lean, will be teaching across the Junior School and continuing to lead the enhancement of the learning experience for all our Junior School students. Ms Lean will be based in the Year 7 & 8 Home Room. Mrs  Le Lievre and Mrs Cole will continue in their learning support roles across the school.

Ms Lean leads a very talented team of teachers – Mrs McLaughlin, Ms Hyland and Mrs Denton-Jones. Mrs Denton-Jones is an experienced teacher who comes to us from Queenstown and we warmly welcome her and her family to Akaroa. Ms Mann will also be taking some classes in the Junior School while Mr Brittenden is away on his exciting overseas trip.

Middle and Senior School

French and Music – While Mr Brittenden is on leave,

Mr Bygate will be teaching Performing Arts, Maori and  Senior Photography while we recruit for a new teacher. We are grateful to Ms Smith who has left well planned coursework for these students and we wish her well in her new endeavours.

Building Project

The builder’s site office and container have been moved on to the school grounds – the wet weather has impacted on the site set up but it will stop raining eventually.

Mr Alan Nobbs is assisting us with overseeing the building project and we thank him very much for volunteering his time and expertise. The Ministry of Education is responsible for the implementation of the project, however we still have a monitoring role and attend fortnightly Project Group meetings.

Nicola Hornsey (Commissioner) and Ray Bygate (Principal)
