Strike Action and School Supervision
Tena koutou parents and caregivers,
Yesterday the Teacher Unions, NZEI Te Rui Roa and PPTA, confirmed that Area School Teachers will be joining the combined strike action in the form of a full day strike on Wednesday 29th May 2019. All teachers who are union members are required to take strike action. We apologise for the late notice but this was out of our control.
As a gesture of good will to our school community the school will endeavour to provide supervision for students whose parents will really struggle to look after them next Wednesday. Student safety is paramount so this provision will be dependent upon a safe staff to student ratio. This provision also relies upon the availability of non union teacher relievers, learning support staff and non union teaching staff.
Can parents and families who need supervision of their children next Wednesday during normal school hours please contact the school office by 9.00am Monday 27 May so that we can confirm arrangements later that day.
Nga mihi mahana,
Warm greetings,
Akaroa Area School Commissioner and Staff

Parent Drop Off/Pick Up Rue Jolie
We have become quite concerned about the congestion immediately in front of the school on Rue Jolie, particularly at the end of the day when children are being picked up. We have had a few ‘near misses’ with children running out onto the road in front of cars, children running in front of the buses and a general lack of awareness regarding road safety. This situation becomes compounded when parents double park on an already busy road. To avoid this type of behaviour and to make sure our children are safe we strongly encourage parents to utilise the parking spaces on Selwyn Avenue – please make this your primary drop off and pick up zone. There is always plenty of parking to enable parents to come on site to meet children or to wait in your cars – we need to work together for the safety of all children.
Junior Gates
We would like to remind parents that gates on Bruce Terrace are locked from 9am – 3pm. Please use other entrances to the school during these hours. Parents are reminded to sign in at the office when coming into school during the day.
School Jackets
We are looking at putting in an order for school jackets once we reach a reasonable number (to reduce freight charges). If you are keen to get a jacket please contact the office. Cost is $85 (plus freight if applicable).
Rarotonga Meeting
Meeting will take place on Monday 20 May at 5pm in room 10. All students intending to go plus a parent should attend.
