Free Workshop for Parents
Please see the flyer below from the Mental Health Education and Resource Centre regarding a free workshop for parents. The topic is, supported and resilient children and teens.
Wednesday 5 December 6-8pm in the school gym.

Marco Varray
Akaroa Area School is proud to announce that Marco’s film Sustainable People on Banks Peninsula is one of the 20 winning films in the Outlook for Someday competition. Please click on this link to watch Marco’s film and scroll to the bottom of the page for the online form where you can vote for Marco’s film to win The Stuff Audience Choice Award. Please encourage all your family and friends to vote for Marco too.

Grandparents and Pompallier Resident Christmas Morning Tea
Years 1-6 Grandparents and Pompallier residents are welcome to a Christmas morning tea on Tuesday December 11 from 10-11am in Hinewai. Please see the invitation attached and share with Grandparents. We ask that you rsvp to the aasoffice@akaroa.school.nz or ring 304 7108 by Monday December 3.

Celebrating our weeks of ELI
We would like to invite parents and whanau to join us at 12.30 on Friday 7 December for a shared lunch at school. The students will take this opportunity to showcase some of their learning over the previous three weeks.

Pet Projects
Please bring your pet projects to Ms Hyland and leave them in The Hut (beside Onuku) by Wednesday Nov 28. They will be displayed in the foyer of the gym on Spring Show day.

Enviro/Technology Week- Week 7
Years 6-10 will be participating in an environmental and technology week. Please see our Facebook page for fabulous photos of students participating in last week’s inquiries. 

Au Revoir to Wendy Murray
Wendy is retiring from the Akaroa Library and her last day is on Friday November 30. She has been invited by the school for morning tea on Thursday to wish her well and to say thank you.

Afternoon Tea for Volunteers
Thank you to those who attended our afternoon tea for volunteers who have continually supported the school in so many ways. For those who couldn’t attend we say ‘thank you’ to you as well and we couldn’t do what we do, without you!

Prizegiving
A reminder that prize giving will be held on 13 December.

Fire Wise- Years 1-5
Thank you to Ben and Laura who were amazing with the students in spite of the challenging weather conditions last Tuesday. Ben and Laura were very impressed with the student’s questions and knowledge around fire safety. 

Spring Show Hamper Raffle

Spring Show Consent Form

On Friday November 30, from 11am, we will be holding our Spring Show event involving all of the students Years 1-10. As with last year, this year’s event will have an Enviro/Eco Christmas Theme.
There will be the usual Pet Show along with plenty of other activities and stalls for everyone to enjoy. Come and join the fun, all friends and family are welcome.
We will have a variety of competitions this year and we encourage every student to participate in at least one event and enter into the spirit of the fair.

Yr 6-10 Experiential & Inquiry Learning

For the next three weeks, beginning Monday 19 November, all Year 6-10 students will be involved in a series of activities and experiences designed around experiential and inquiry learning. Each week has a different overarching concept and the students have selected a range of inquiry topics for each of those weeks.

The plan is as follows:

  • Week One: Monday 19 November – Friday 23 November, Art and Culture Week.
  • Week Two: Monday 26 November – Friday 30 November, Enviro/Tech Week.  The inquiry for this week will lead up to the Spring Show on Friday 30 November.
  • Week Three: Monday 3 December – Friday 7 December, Water Week.  Part of the activities in this week will include the Senior School picnic at Sandy Bay.

We would like to invite parents and whanau to join us at 12.30 on Friday 7 December for a shared lunch at school. The students will take this opportunity to showcase some of their learning over the previous three weeks. For these weeks the students are to come in their PE uniform. 

We encourage you to have a chat to your children about their inquiries, what they are wanting to find out, the types of activities they will be involved in and reflections on how their inquiries have proceeded.

Spring Show Entry Form
Just a reminder to parents to complete the Spring Show Entry Form so we know what students are participating in for this event. It is expected that students participate in at least one event on the day.

Hamper Raffle
Could all students please bring a tasty non-perishable item to the office by the 28th of November for a Christmas hamper raffle for spring show. Thank you


Second Hand Toy Stall
Years 7 and 8 would like to ask for any unwanted ‘tidy’ second hand toys which they will sell at our Spring Show which is a fundraiser for the school. Please bring any toys/books/games to Room 9. We appreciate the donation!


Lemons for Lemonade
Please bring any lemons to Miss Mann in the Food Tech room for the lemonade that Year 9s will be making for the Spring Show.

19 Nov Reminders

Akaroa Area School is thrilled to announce that our revamped and revitalized school website is now live with a new look, enhanced functionality and updated content. A huge thank you to Vicky King for the massive amount of work she has put into rebuilding the site and for her ongoing support to Tania and Joan.

Fire Wise with Ben Watts, Tuesday 20 November
Years 1-5 will be participating in a Fire Wise programme with Benjamin Watts (an ex Akaroa student) who is now a fire fighter in Christchurch. Look out for the fire truck on the school field!  Please see flyer below, parents are welcome to join us for the afternoon events.

Art and Culture Inquiry: 19-23 Nov
Years 6-10 will be participating in an Art and Culture week using their skills and knowledge of the inquiry process to delve into a topic of their interest. This is a great way for the Year 6s to integrate into the Middle School programme.

Spring Show 30 Nov

On Friday 30 November,  we will be holding our Spring Show Day.  This is a gala event involving all of the students Years 1-10 from 11-2:30pm.

Come and join the fun, all friends and family are welcome.  For further information, please check your emails or see your child’s teacher.

12 Nov Reminders

Examinations
Good luck to our NCEA students who are sitting exams over the next few weeks. If exams are in progress please keep noise to a minimum outside exam areas. 

Pool
Due to exams in the gym on Wednesday 14, Monday 19 and Wednesday 21 November the afternoon pool session will not start until 5:30pm

Sunsmart Policy
We are a sunsmart school. Our Sun Protection policy outlines sunsmart behaviour for students (and staff) and is attached so that you can help your child/children be sunsmart. 

Public holiday
School will be closed on Friday (Anniversary Day).
